One of the eight Line Islands that straddle the equator, Christmas Island is the largest atoll in the Pacific. Its name comes from the fact that Captain James Cook came ashore on Christmas Day almost 200 years ago. What can you do on Christmas Island? Swim in crystal clear water. Go bird-watching in a birder's paradise. Snorkel or scuba along pristine reefs. Then spread out on a sandy beach and savor the sapphire seas and total peace and privacy. It is also a great bone fishing region.
